James Kirkup poems (MS 20), ca. 1942-1956.

The collection comprises handwritten, typed, and carbon copies of poetry written by James Kirkup between 1942 and 1956. These include a number of handwritten corrections and annotations by Kirkup, the latter detailing the location in which individual poems were written, etc. The collection includes such titles as: "Scarborough," "The Narwhal," "Gradus and Parnassum," "The Forgotten Rite," "Night Ferry: South Shields," "The Resurrected Man," etc. Many of these works are signed by Kirkup.

James Kirkup (1918 - ) was born in South Shields, County Durham and educated at Durham University. The travel writer, poet, novelist, playwright, translator, and broadcaster has authored over thirty works. Kirkup became the first Gregory Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University (1950-1952).
